Hi all, My name is Bob, and my location is IO82.

From my call sign you can see I've passed my Class B some time ago! However after a few years operating on the VHF/UHF bands I became increasingly cheesed of with the entire thing and sold all my Amateur equipment, let my licence lapse and moved on. That was about 15 years ago. Over the past 12 - 18 months the interest as returned much stronger than it ever was. A big part of this renewed interest comes from the new licence structure which allows the likes of me on to the HF bands!

I did try for my Morse but could only manage about 8 wpm before the rot set in. My wife passed her Morse and gained a G0 call.

I will not bore you with any more details but bringing it all up to date I contacted Ofcom a couple of weeks ago enquiring about having my licence re-issued. This was done very quickly and without fuss. I found Ofcom to be very helpful in dealing with my questions and sorting it all out.

At present I own a HF radio but little else. Starting over again is a little daunting and with finances being tight may take a while to get back 'on air'.

I hope this forum can keep my interest alive whilst I get set up.

Thanks.

Hiya Bob :D

Welcome to the Ham Radio Forum!

Sorry for the delay in replying to your post, it's been quite quiet on here since the World Cup started!

I noticed we're in the same locator square, so "Hi!" to you neighbour *waves*

I think you're not alone in enjoying the change in licensing conditions. Huge numbers have disappeared off VHF and UHF and gone to where the waves are longer.

Glad to read that your XYL has a G0' call, does she operate on HF much? And does she still keep up with CW in practice, or has the key been 'retired' to the junk box? :D

You say it might take a while to get set up again, but I think you have most of what you need already. The TS-450 is a good rig, I wonder if you have the ATU installed?

I've always kept my licenses running, even when I've gone through a number of years of total lack of interest in the hobby. Now that they are free, and you can have just about as many call-signs as you like, I had my old G1' call reissued, though I always tend to use my G0' call on air.

Because I work in a Ham Radio environment, I tend not to bother too much about 'playing radio' at home. If I do it's normally because I'm experimenting with some new idea etc.

I used to crave some of the bigger (and more expensive) rigs, but again, because I work with them all day long I found that after a while they all seemed much of a muchness, and what I realised was that your antenna and the prevailing propagation were far more important that how much your rig costs, or how many 'bells and whistles' it has.

Once again, welcome to our humble little site, and I look forward to chatting with you around the forum and maybe even on-air!
