Morserino Wi-Fi QSOs

With the release of firmware version 3.x, the Morserino now has the capability to communicate with another Morserino anywhere else, over the internet. It links to the internet over it's own local wi-fi network. The remote Morserino does the same. Each Morserino has the IP address of the other Morserino. Morse code is then sent back and forth, being decoded on the screen.

Interestingly, unlike most other means of sending and receiving morse code, this is not a broadcast - it's Morserino-to-Morserino. So no-one can listen in.

If you have a Morserino and would like to QSO with another Morserino operator, PM that operator to arrange a contact time (specifying what time zone). You will also need to exchange IP addresses immediately before the contact starts.

If you have a Morserino and want to QSO but don't know who else has a Morserino, just post your willingness to QSO in this thread. I'll do it myself next as an example.

I would be happy to have a Morserino wi-fi QSO with anyone else. Please PM me so that we can make the arrangements.

My comfortable speed is 10 - 12 wpm. With the screen decode, I should be able to go faster. I can also send slower by inserting Farnsworth spacing. I'm very happy to QSO with someone who makes lots of mistakes and goes slowly - I know how difficult it can be to get started, but also how satisfying it can be to chat using morse.

Hi,
a few quick points on using the Morserino for on-line QSOs...

1) (just a technical point) the Morserino-32 (M-32) only uses its own, self-generated WiFi network to allow you to enter config parameters like the real (internet-connected) WiFi network's ESSID and Password, and the destination for IP connections.

2) Although you can WiFi connect to another M-32 across the internet, directly, that's usually a bit tricky, as you'd have to set up port forwarding on one/both routers. It works fine for clubs on a local network, of course. Easier for most users would be to use one of the internet repeaters, such as cq.morserino.info, which will echo out CW packets to other logged-in users. Using this, no one has to set up any router port forwarding, because you are all 'out-going'.

3) If you're shy, or have no friends (don't ask me which one applies to me!), you can talk to qsobot.online, which is a Go programme running on the internet, which will have a virtual QSO with you. It has 35 ish different bot personalities, and will go as slowly as you do. It doesn't get grumpy if you get stuck and give up :-) The bots will even give you accurate weather reports...

I hope this helps. Happy to answer questions on it.

Thanks for running this forum, BTW. It seems to have lots of interesting stuff on it!

Best regards,

John, M0STQ

Hi John,

That looks fascinating. Not having a Morserino, I may have a look whether the MOPP protocol can be used by a homebrew equivalent...

Just one thing, your TLS cert has expired :-)

Thanks for sharing though.

Stefan,
many thanks for the polite reminder about the TLS cert on qsobot.online.

Now fixed (as well as some others I'd allowed to get stale!)

Best regards,

John, M0STQ
