Over the years I've found some interesting and unusual items of telegraphic and Morse ephemera, this picture postcard is one such item.
It was posted on August 12th 1931 at 3pm (at least that's what the postmark reads!).
The card is from someone signing themselves "IFW", and was addressed to:-
Radio Brothers and
Miss Barbara French(?)
R.F.D. #3
West Cornwall
Conn. (?)
The surname of the young lady in question, and the last line of the address are difficult to read. Maybe the address makes sense to one of our members in the USA? I did try to find out what R.F.D. #3 was, but to no avail.
The large house is apparently called "Pinehurst" and is located in Pa. (Pennsylvania?)
Over the years it seems to have been a guest house, some kind of retirement home, and possibly a Golf Club too.
The message in Morse code reads:-
HERES THE GLORIFIED FARM HOUSE WE CALL OUR HOTEL,=
HOW IS THE RADO COMING ON?
I HOPE YOU ARE NOT READING THIS EXCEPT BY PRONOUNCING
DAHS ETC
AR VA
IFW
For some reason the author used a comma followed by a stop after the word hotel, and also the "I" is missing from "radio".
I'm guessing that this, and a lot of other cards I've seen, use Morse simply because it's possible to get a much longer message on the card than would be possible with plain text.
Interesting item all the same!
