JJJ electronics have various kit offerings on ebay, with their dual band (40/80 or 40/20) QRP CW transceiver being available for about ?30 as a kit, circa ?35 assembled, or for ?75 delivered you get the enclosure and freq display as well.

This looks to me to be pretty good value, especially as in the UK we may pay VAT/Parcelfarce collection charges on kits from overseas, and JJJ is UK based.

Of course, another very good value QRP transceiver option is QRP Labs who were a bit of a game changer in the QRP kit world, with their kits being both very sophisticated and low priced.

I think the JJJ kits have DC receivers. But so did older classic and well loved radios like the Lake DTRs and the Heathkit HW8.

Just wondered if anyone had tried a JJJ kit?

Hiya Pete.

JJJ has been going for some time now on eBay. I first spotted him when he started selling a three band DC receiver kit.  http://www.wavehunter.co.uk/direct-conversion-receiver He used some polyvaricon tuning capacitors that had a 90 deg geared reduction drive, and he had them on sale as a separate item listing on eBay. http://www.wavehunter.co.uk/variable-capacitor-with-reduction-drive

After thinking about purchasing some (for a week or two!) I went to try yo find them and as luck would have it the listing had gone. After he sold all of his DC RX kits he then 'vanished' for a number of months.

I get the feeling he produces a project or kit, puts together a bunch of them, and when they're gone he goes too! ;D

He registered the "WaveHunter" domain in early November, 2015, so the site has been around for a while.

He's one of those sellers where I have a look at the items they have up for grabs from time to time, but never seem to get around to buying anything. bh

Well, I've just bought one! Given his online shop is closing, I've followed the government advice 'if not now, when?'

For ?59.99 and ?4.50 post I've ordered the 80/40 dual bander, with case, backlit S meter, freq display, IRT, etc.

DC receivers have their quirks, and it uses a traditional VFO with tuning capacitor rather than varicap diode, and certainly no DDS or PLL frequency synthesis.

So it's a bit old school, and one report says a bit of tuning backlash, but I had a lot of fun with my old HW8 so I think I will enjoy it. I suspect it might drift a wee bit until warmed up.

I see Jameel is selling various other bits - filters, VFOs, IRT boards, variable caps with reduction drive, etc.

I used to have an HW-8.

There's an HW-9 (for certain), and possibly an HW-7 floating about in the attic somewhere. :-[

I think I have more radios than I have spare time to use them all. :(

I keep meaning to have a cull on all this junk, I'll get around to it one day (maybe!).
