I've just joined up and would like to say "hello" to everyone on the board . I'm an old timer ... first licensed in 1964 . My real fascination with radio started when I DX'd the AM broadcast bands I guess, but when I first heard shortwave broadcasts from overseas on an old console radio/phonograph my folks had I was hooked for life. To this day , I'm still awed by being able to listen to , or contact people around the world with a little box on the desk and a few wires strung up in the air . Amazing stuff to me even all these years later.

Good to see someone from Arizona. I live in Texas but grew up in Arizona. Lived in the Phoenix area first. Then my parents moved to Cottonwood, Arizona in the Verde Valley. Graduated from High School at Mingus Union. I went to school up on the hill in Jerome, Arizona. Quite a town. Alot of history with that town. Hope to talk with you in the future. I graduated from High School in 1960 so you can see I am not a youngster but not ready to step into a grave yet, lol. Have a nice day. 73.

Normally the folks I meet in connection with Ham Radio make me feel old, but when I read that you were licensed in 1964 you made me feel young! (I'm all for people who make me feel young hi hi)

LOL Mark , be careful as age slips up on you .... I distinctly remember listening to hams that are my age now , back when I was in my late 30's listening to the radio ... and thinking " man , some day I'll be that old " nah , its a long ways away . But it happens LOL . Thanks for the welcome ... looks like a great site

I think a bunch of us got our start DXing the BCB--it was fun then and still is for me---my only regret is that AM BCB programming has sunk to levels i could have never imagined several years ago<smile>--but using crystal sets to DX the AM band has added new challenge for me these days--

I agree Jerry , even the shortwave stations are not the same as before. I remember listening to BBC years ago and pretty much could take it as the gospel truth , but any more I'm not so sure . Everyone has there agenda nowadays it seems and in somebodies pocket .

Basically I'm a tinkerer and still like to build my own antennas and run lower power with older rigs . I'm even toying with the idea of getting one of these low power xcver kits to build ( couple watts ) to put the fun back in radio .

I have built a few xtal receivers over the years from junk laying around . You can get amazing performance with one too . A simple 1,2 or 3 tube regen rcvr from junk would be a fun project too . Even as a ham I listen a lot more than I transmit .
